National Sibling Sexual Abuse Conference for Frontline Sectors – Was delivered on Wednesday 2, February 2022, 9:30am-3:45pm (Online)

Sibling sexual abuse is considered to be the most prevalent form of child sexual abuse in UK homes and more common than sexual abuse by parents or adult carers.  This conference is designed to share national best practice on supporting children, young people, adult victim-survivors and families affected by sibling sexual abuse.

This conference aims to build professional confidence in and knowledge of sibling sexual abuse, enabling appropriate and effective responses to this abuse across different sectors. It will share national best practice, guidance and advice.

The conference was organised by the Rape Crisis England & Wales (RCEW) sibling sexual abuse national project, which is funded by the Home Office and Ministry of Justice. It wass tailored for those working in frontline sectors, meaning any sector which is public or patient facing.

Delegates will as a result of attending the conference:

• Build professional confidence in and knowledge of sibling sexual abuse, supporting appropriate and effective responses to this abuse across different sectors.
• Gain professional insight into the particular unique complexities of sibling sexual abuse compared to other forms of child sexual abuse and child sexual exploitation.
• Be able to better support children, young people and families affected by sibling sexual abuse (including children who have harmed or have been harmed)  through increased professional confidence and knowledge.
• Be able to better support adult victim-survivors of sibling sexual abuse  through increased professional confidence and knowledge of best practice for trauma-informed support and counselling for this abuse.
• Gain a wider understanding of sibling sexual abuse within a historical, cultural, societal, legal, safeguarding and clinical context.
• Know where future support and information can be accessed on sibling sexual abuse and have the opportunity to professionally network within sectors in order to build support and advice links for future.
• Have the opportunity to discuss and ask questions about sibling sexual abuse in a safe environment and network.

• Professor Simon Hackett, Deputy Provost at Durham University and Professor of Child Abuse and Neglect in the Department of Sociology
